Property History:
Monticola, a Greek Revival Mansion located in Howardsville, was built in the 1850s for Daniel James Hartsook, a merchant, banker and planter. In 1865, Union troops raided Howardsville and Monticola, but left the mansion undamaged. In 1887, Emil Otto Nolting purchased the estate. Nolting modified the portico and added a semicircular porch at the rear of the house. Monticola remained in the Nolting family into the twentieth century. Emily Nolting allowed the movie "Virginia" to be filmed at the estate which can be seen throughout the film. Emily's sister Dr. Margaret Nolting inherited the home upon Emily's death. The estate changed hands several times since then.

Property Description:
Monticola is a stunning example of a pre-war Greek Revival plantation home. The home is fully renovated (with plans approved by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources). We were able to restore the original front porch design. A kitchen, bathrooms and closets were added. The home is now available for purchase with 200 acres ($3,995,000) or several other acreage combinations up to 292 acres ($4,595,000). We are willing to entertain trade offers for the home and some or all of the acreage. The home is located about 30 miles south of Charlottesville, VA in the historic village of Howardsville.
